Government Official Says Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Personnel Instructed to Avoid Secret Talk in Cars.

A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for Defence Staff

During a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss secret information while riding in Chinese cars.

He explained that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a issue in all modern cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that exist in all automobile, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

The announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.

The wider security environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in every areas of government activities, including vehicle use to discussions habits.
